Located in Canada’s only Maritime-Mediterranean climatic zone, Cowichan Lake enjoys the warmest average year-round temperature in Canada, an annual sunshine of 2000 hours, and a 250-day growing season. The Town of Lake Cowichan was incorporated in 1944, and now has a population of approximately 3000, with an additional 3500 residents in the surrounding communities. Lake Cowichan is situated beside the beautiful Cowichan River that offers both recreational and commercial opportunites. Cowichan Lake is the second largest lake on Vancouver Island, and is 34 km in length and in some areas over 500 feet deep. Cowichan Lake is famous for its pristine waters, natural beauty and all year round accessability. Among the social and recreational highlights of the year are the popular Lake Days with its Lady of the Lake contest, Soft Ball Tournaments, Breakfast on the Town, Parade, Logger Sports, River Races, Marathon Swim, Great Lake Walk and Youbou Regatta.

Lake Cowichan itself offers affordable housing, six schools (elementary to secondary), seniors residences, home care, private medical and dental facilities, police, fire, ambulance and emergency planning and rescue facilities, and a B.C. government access centre. Most day-to-day needs are provided by a post office, Island Savings Credit Union and RBC Royal Bank, community hall, sports complex/arena, churches and a museum. The surrounding communities of Cowichan Lake include Mesachie Lake, Youbou, Honeymoon Bay and Caycuse. Cowichan Lake also serves as the gateway to Vancouver Island's world famous west coast including Port Renfrew, Pacific Rim National Park, West Coast Trail, Carmanah Wilderness Park and Walbran Provincial Park.

One of the many benefits to living in Lake Cowichan is the short commute to Duncan, about 20 minutes. This thriving commercial centre connects to the Island Highway and is mid-way between Nanaimo and Victoria. Duncan provides ready access to local facilities and amenities including hospital, university, large big box stores such as Wal-Mart, olympic class swimming pool and much more.
